MINI MUNSTER.

mini munster tops and shorts // red slip-ons // vans shark slip-ons // reef surfer slip-ons

we are kind of obsessed with the mini munster clothing line.  maybe it's because i have an obsession with all australian clothing lines or maybe it's the whole deviance of it all, but there's a sort of effortlessly cool vibe to each piece of clothing, instantly making an infant that too-cool-bad-boy that melts all the girls hearts.

BABYLEGS TO THE RESCUE.

after a few days of constant movement on hands and knees across every rug and carpet in the house, holden's little knees were raw and red with rug burn.  after a day or two he seemed to be somewhat tentative about crawling, attempting a frog-like leap versus the traditional crawl in an effort to salvage his knees.  i remembered the pair of babylegs leggings that holden wore often during the winter as an extra layer and realized they would be a perfect solution to this crawling dilemma.

HERS & HIS.

4. body short whale // 5. infant striped rainboots

yesterday, holden started crawling and upon the realization that he can get from place to place on his own, he has decided that he isn't going to stop moving.  he pounds the ground in excitement with his fists at his accomplishment of getting where he needs to be going and i feel like such a proud mama.

WEEKEND.

mama wore: target dress, jcrew sweater, zara leggings, jessica simpson boots.
baby wore: h&m top and pants.

with gray skies and illness hanging over us, we have been feeling cooped up and stir crazy and a little lonely and isolated, restrained within the four walls of our home.  i never realized that getting sick when you have a baby means that you are banned from all activities with other babies which has severely limited our interactions with other people.  despite still not feeling well (a week and a half later) we managed to escape from our confine for the day, in between the scattered showers, getting out of the house for the first time in what feels like forever and running a few errands.  in the hopes of overcoming all of our dismalality, i opted for some bright stripes for both holden and i, and the universe seemed to acknowledge this, the sun peeking through the clouds just as we left the house even if it was only for a brief millisecond.  hoping that we are back to 100% next week and can resume our normal weekly routine of activities.

FAMILY STYLE.

mama wore: h&m sweater, f21 dress, zara leggings, jessica simpson boots. dada wore: billabong beanie, vans hoodie, h&m pants, vans shoes.  little man wore: quiksilver thermal, h&m pants.

as soon as i found out i was having a baby boy, i dreamed of my little tow-headed, blue-eyed boy standing in the surf, his small body bronzed from his afternoons spent in the sun and the sand.  i already knew he was going to be a so-cal surfer boy, a miniature version of dustin, so before holden was born, i began to compile his wardrobe, constantly hunting for clothes that would suit his laid-back-surfer-slightly-hipster style.  however, finding baby boy outfits that fit this style proved to be more difficult than i anticipated.  if i was having a girl, i probably would have just bought out the entire girls' section of almost every store i walked into, but looking for baby boy's clothing was near impossible.  i half-heartedly joke that having a boy kept me from going broke (although it's probably a much truer statement than i would like to admit).  i would rummage through rack after rack of miniature sweaters and tees, fingering shorts and pants that were the size of my forearm with a look of distaste plastered across my face as i perused the selection hanging before me.  where were the surfer clothes for babies?

i knew that my baby was going to wear quiksilver and hurley baby, but finding these brands can be near impossible.  the online selection is limited and the sizing in stores usually starts at the toddler sizes.  thankfully, the nordstrom's racks in la and san diego have been our baby style saviors.  for some reason, they always seem to have a huge selection of the most amazing quiksilver and hurley baby boy clothes.  after a few trips down south and months of sending friends and family on shopping sprees for me, we have finally compiled a wardrobe that holden and i can be proud of.  he finally has a wardrobe that represents his style.

all my hard work as holden's stylist paid off because today, one of my mommy friends was introducing holden and me to her friend and she said, "this is holden.  he is the hipster of the group.  he is always very stylish." :: ahhhhh :: what a satisfying feeling.

i am still dreaming of rvca coming out with a baby boy clothing line (can you imagine?!)

ON THE OPEN ROAD

Over the weekend we inherited a vintage Cadillac.  Not exactly sure what to do with this random surprise as we already own two new cars and a vespa, but I'm sure we can find a use for it.  The rusty red color of the car immediately brings visions of the desert and has me dreaming of drive-in movies, an open freeway in the middle of nowhere, parking at a lookout point and necking under a star studded sky, sipping lemonade under a giant sun hat at the Parker in Palm Springs, and sitting on the hood under a blazing sky of orange and crimson.

There's something about the temperature rising that automatically raises your happiness level with it.   The weather couldn't have been more perfect this weekend, reminding me of those hot summer days of which you spend the entirety outside toasting your skin in the sun until you suddenly realize that the sun is no longer up, zipping into a hoodie over your barely-there summer clothes as dusk begins to fall and despite the nighttime chill, you romp around the night in your daytime clothes...(except we don't stay out after sundown anymore so this scenario may no longer apply).

I threw on this tribal/ikat shift dress that I love for the fact that it feels as though I'm wearing nothing at all (I spent much of pregnancy lazing about in it for this reason).  The dude shirt may be my most favorite item of clothing in the little man's closet.  Super soft and super thin, it's Holden's equivalent to my not-wearing-anything dress.  We frolicked through the afternoon before parking ourselves on the hood of the car to watch the sun fall from the sky.

HIGH TIDE, LOW TIDE

(H&M sweater, Nordstrom onesie, thrifted H&M sweatpants, Target surfer shoes)

While there is nothing quite as relaxing as sitting under a blazing sun and feeling the warmth of the sun's rays slowly heat my skin to the boiling point while listening to the waves wash upon the shore, there's something about watching an angry sea brimming with wild whitecaps that brings an inexplainable feeling of peace and calm over me. Maybe its because the ocean is showing off her strength and power and as if in a duel and knowing I am not an even contender, I have no other choice but to surrender and let go. I spent a small part of every day of my pregnancy sitting and watching the waves pound threateningly onto the sand in a fit of rage as the wind danced all around me enlisting my hair as his partner. The ocean is my meditation, my therapy, my "me time", my peace. Although I'd love for H to know the softer side of the ocean where he can strip down and wade in without any fear, I hope that rougher seas brings him the peace that they bring me.

Further south, in a much calmer and warmer setting than what san francisco has to offer, we strolled along the water, introducing H to a place we love.  H finally fit into his surfer shoes, miniature versions of daddy's, that we've been attempting to put on his feet since day one.  And I couldn't resist this gorgeous knitted hoodie, despite the fact that the elbow patches are currently forearm patches.  I just couldn't wait a minute longer for him to actually fit into it.

THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS

(Sweet Peanut onesie)

I am always on the hunt for adorable one pieces. I love them on H. They somehow preserve his littleness, freezing his time as a baby where he looks like the baby that he is unlike the majority of his closet that instead disguise him as a little man. And its always easier to throw one item as a change of clothes into the diaper bag versus an entire outfit of onesie, pants, and shirt. There are so many things that I love about this piece - pure simplicity, supreme comfort, passable as pajamas but actually looks like it's meant to be worn out of the house, and one of those easy things to throw on on a warm afternoon.  Made out of a stretchy cotton fabric, it's like zipping into a second skin.  Glad that it's finally been able to make a solo appearance without the abundance of layers that have been accompanying it for the last couple of months which kind of took away from the simplicity of the entire thing.  Can't seem to stray away from horizontal stripes when it comes to baby boy clothes, but we're obviously not having any trouble integrating them into Holden's wardrobe.

HEAT WAVE

(Baby Gap onsie, H&M pants)

We were giddy today. I blame our happy delirium state on the absurdity of summer's appearance in the middle of winter's transition into spring. I was made aware that just as quickly as this summer oasis appeared it is going to disappear before tomorrow morning, fading back into winter dulldom overnight so that when we wake, we'll believe that we dreamed the entire thing.  We used this as an excuse to avoid the inside all together and sought out a terrace for lunching, enjoyed a tall glass of iced lemonade, felt the grass between our bare toes, made friends at the park, smelled bbq in the air and decided to partake ourselves, and left the screen doors open into the late evening.

Free from heavy jackets, hats, closed-toed shoes, and the weight of winter entirely, we were liberated, feeling both whimsical and reckless.  I gallivanted around braless and bare-toed in a thin, Diesel, t-shirt dress and Holden managed to wear the majority of his summer wardrobe in the span of 5 hours.  We spotted these pants on our latest H&M run and made a beeline for them as soon as the salmon color entered my peripheral vision.  I cuffed the bottoms which immediately resulted in summer perfection, knowing they will be a recurring theme in Holden's attire for the next couple of months.
